Agnes was born at "Springfield" P.E. Co. VA. She married her second cousin, Capt. (War of 1812) Henry Edward Watkins, in 1815. The "Venables of Virginia" study states that "She was considered a woman of great dignity and gracious manner and queenly bearing as well as of unusual intellectual attainments". In her day it is reported that the head gardner, Abram, turned the plantation's 10 acres into a paradise of lawns, boxed-bordered flower beds, and avenues of elms (all laid out by an English landscape architect). Their children were: Francis Nathaniel Watkins, Henry E. Watkins, Jr,, Elizabeth Watkins, Rev. Samuel Woodson Watkins, Mary Cabell Watkins, Mrs. Agnes W. Watkins Embry, Richard V. Watkins, Mrs. Margaret C. Watkins Martin, Henrietta Watkins, Catherine A. Watkins, Mrs. Frances Leigh Watkins Irvine.
