The son of Ari Leib (Louis) and Dwoire (Debra/Dora) Rutkonitz? Alkes, born in Bialystok, Russia (now Poland) Abram Alkes entered the US from Hamburg in 1903. He had siblings Henry (Chonel) Elkis, Alter Isaac Alkes, Morris Alkes, Isadore Alkes and Reisel Alkes (who disappears after emigrating) and one other brother we believe went to Israel and had a son Chaim.

He married Jennie Olshanitsky in 1905 and naturalized as Abraham Elkes in 1942. He spent the rest of his life living in New York. They had five children: Yetta (married Sam Krinsky), Ralph (married Tillie Swirsky), Nathan (married Claire Klepper), Rose (married Milton J Eidelberg) and Annie. Annie died after an operation for a brain tumor at the age of 8 years.

Many thanks to findagrave's Jim Murray and his Angel Babies Project for helping us find and memorialize Annie properly.
