1868 - 1939
Abner Herman Ervin the son of John Alford and Laura Elizabeth Mumford Ervin. He had a store just west of Richlands, where he sold everything from cheese to ladies' hats and shoes. He was a wonderful, Christian man who taught Sunday school at the Richlands Methodist Church for years, and sang in the choir.
He married Virginia "Ginnie" McGowan, of Duplin County, on January 11, 1899. They had five lovely girls: Elizabeth Maria, Unnamed Infant Daughter, Ione Dixon, Evelyn H. and Margaret L. Ervin.
Abner was originally buried at the Abner Ervin Cemetery near Richlands, Onslow, North Carolina. His original headstone remains there (see top photo). His gravesite was moved to Onslow Memorial Park in Jacksonville by his son; it's assumed this was done when Abner's wife, Virginia, passed on. They share a headstone at this gravesite. Birth dates are conflicting; headstone, death certificate, etc. Research continues.
