FENLEY

Stephen H. Fenley, son of Stephen H. and Gertrude Bettis Fenley, was born Aug. 29, 1911, in Vermillion, S.D. He passed away on Dec. 8, 1989, at the Lucas County Health Center at the age of 78 years and four months.

He received his education and graduated in Elk Point, S.D. In 1931, he moved to a farm near Russell, where he was engaged in farming with his father.

He was united in marriage to Mae N. Gladson on March 10, 1934. To this union two children were born: Marilyn Woodcock and Keith, both of Chariton.

In 1941, he moved to his farm in Pleasant Township. In 1954, he became employed at Firestone Tire and Rubber in Des Moines, where he worked for 22 1/2 years, while continuing to farm, until his retirement in 1976.

He and Mae moved to Chariton, where they built a new home, in 1978. He loved caring for his garden, lawn and home. Steve enjoyed his retirement to the fullest.

He faithfully attended the Nazarene Church and always took every opportunity to witness to others about his Lord.

Steve was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather and always worked hard for everyone. His friends were many and he was always helping someone. He was known as grandpa by many children and young people, which he loved.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and a grandson, Christopher.

Survivors include his wife, Mae; a daughter, Marilyn Woodcock and husband, Robert; a son, Keith and wife, Linda; three grandchildren, Lisa Woodcock, Stephen K. Fenley, and Robert E. Fenley and wife, Jodi, all of Chariton. Also surviving are two sisters, Florence Dean and husband Ralph, of Russell, and Gladys Dandurand of Spearfish, S.D.; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, 1989, at the Fielding Funeral Home, with the Rev. Leroy Glendenning officiating. Serving as bearers were Ralph Dean, Bill Hunter, Mike Osborn, Rob E. Fenley, Wendell Woods and Steve K. Fenley. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery.
