According the the 1841 England Census, he may have been born a twin to sister, Margaret; or they were just born within the same year.
Richard married Sarah Jane McKay, daughter of John McKay (mother unknown), a mariner by trade, on 7 October 1850, in the Church of St. Silas in Liverpool. She must have passed away less than five years later, as his marriage license to Lydia Porter on 30 July 1855 shows him as a widower. Lydia was the daughter of Thomas Porter, a bricklayer, and Sarah Tyrer.
