Betty Alice (Browne) Woodruff, of Chesterton, Indiana died Monday, July 7, 2003 at Life Care Center of the Willows, Valparaiso, Indiana. She was 84.

Betty was born Jan. 10, 1919 at Washington Court House, Ohio, one of four children to Alfred Henry Browne and Freda Moser, who preceded her in death.

On Aug. 8, 1943 in Washington Court House, Ohio, she married Sherman C. Woodruff, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by a son, Harold (Eroica) S. Woodruff of Chino Hills, Calif.;
two daughters, Cheryl Ann (Gene) Smith of Tujunga, Calif. and Linda Lee (Charles) Malott of Valparaiso; a brother, Alfred Brown of Washington Court House; three grandchildren Ryan and Alex Malott and Christopher Woodruff.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, David Edwin Browne and a sister, Miriam Binneger.

She was a resident since 1959 and retired in 1981 from the Duneland Schools where she was employed as a home economics teacher. She was a member of Chesterton First United Methodist Church. She was involved in many church groups including singles group (CHUMS), Guitar Choir, Church Choir and Disciple Group.

She was also a member of the Duneland Garden Club, Beta Gamma Upsilon Sorority, Chesterton Woman's Club (GFWC), Primetimers Club and the Historical Society.

Funeral services, Rev. Terry Rhine officiating, are scheduled at 11 a.m. Friday, July 11 at First United Methodist Church, 434 S. 2nd St., Chesterton. Cremation with interment of cremains will be at Chesterton Cemetery.

Visitation is scheduled from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, July 10, 2003 at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home, 517 Broadway, Chesterton.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or The Willows Nursing Home.
