The Snake River some four miles east of St. Anthony claimed the life of William A. Montague, 79, of Osgood, shortly after 12:30 pm on Sunday.

Fremont County Sheriff Jess Bulls said Mr. Montague was fishing with his son-in-law, George Jones of Idaho Falls. Both men were wading close to the stream bank. Jones told the sheriff that he had looked back, saw his father-in-law wading near the bank.

Jones continued to fish, looking back and saw nothing of Mr. Montague. Thinking his father-in-law had climbed back on the bank for some reason, he continued fishing, but later became worried when Montague failed to reappear.

In concert with other fisherman, the river bank was searched downstream until around 2 pm when the Fremont County Sheriff's department was notified.

A search was organized and the body of Montague was found a half-mile downstream shortly thereafter by Clyde Hughes, Idaho Falls, Sheriff Bulls said. The body was lodged against a rock in a comparatively quiet part of the river.

William Albert Montague, 79, retired farmer, water master, and car salesman was born Dec. 11, 1891 at Panguitch, Utah, the son of James Albert and Lavina Jones Montague. He came to Idaho at the age of 13 with his parents, settling first in Woodville.

At Woodville he married Mary H. Brown on June 1, 1911. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. He moved with his family to Newdale and in 1924 moved to Osgood where he had since resided.

He farmed and worked for the Utah Sugar Company as a water master. After his retirement he was employed as a car salesman by an Idaho Falls automobile dealer.

He served in various organizations of the LDS Church and at the time of his death was a high priest int he Osgood LDS Ward. He served as ward clerk in three different wards. He was an assistant Sunday school superintendent, an avid genealogist and was active in Temple work.

His wife died 1961, ten days after their golden wedding anniversary.

He is survived by four daughters and a son: Mrs. Reed (Nelda) Owens, Idaho Falls, Wayne P. Montague, Blackfoot, Mrs. George (Irna) Jones, Osgood, Mrs. Paul (Iletta) Curtis, Ammon, and Mrs. Faughn Bennett, Provo, Utah; the following brothers and sisters: Joseph J. Montague, Parma, Mrs. Vern (Grace) Huntsman, Shelley, and Leo Montague, Blackfoot; 27 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one son, and several brothers and sisters.
