Born in the Bas-Rhin region of Alsase France, he immigrated to MN in 1856 with his parents. He came here when this country was yet a wilderness and endured all of the hardships which was the lot of that sturdy band of pioneers who braved many dangers in this then new country. He left a wife and 12 children to mourn his loss.
