Henry came to the United States in 1854 from Riedseltz, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France. He married Catherine Beringer, also from Riedseltz in Chicago some time in 1855 or early 1856.

They were territorial pioneers in Washington Twp, Le Sueur Co, MN. Where he filed a land claim in June 1856.

Prior to his immigration he completed his french military obligation by serving six years in the French Navy.

In 1889 he was badly injured when a tornado destroyed a farm building he had taken shelter in. It was said at the time that he never fully recovered from his internal injuries.
