Melvin was the son of John Wesley Shearer and Cynthia Osborne Shearer. He married Sabra Ellen, daughter of Martin H. and Mary Eva Dyehouse, on May 4, 1911 in Danville.

They were the parents of Effie, Edith, Anna, Louella, Dora, Catherine, Melvin, Carl, Harvey, Glenmore and Floyd Shearer.

After he was widowed in 1939, he married Lucy Mae, daughter of Jesse and Elizabeth Stinnett Bruner. Melvin and Lucy were the parents of of Harrison Wayne, Bonnie, Donnie and Douglas Shearer.
