Nathaniel Sykes Donaldson was the son of Nathaniel Danielson/Donaldson and Candace Sykes and the husband of Elizabeth Fairlie Reid. He migrated from NY to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1842 and was an early pioneering businessman in Milwaukee. He owned a dry goods store. With other early merchants he helped organize the Merchants' Mutual Insurance Company in Milwaukee. In the 1850's he served several years as a trustee of the Milwaukee Young Men's Association, a literary institution which offered a library and scientific and literary lectures.

In 1834 Nathaniel and his parents and cousins changed the family surname from Danielson to Donaldson, believing 'Donaldson' to be the original family name in 1600's Scotland.
