Nathaniel Danielson/Donaldson was the son of John Danielson and Ruth Blodgett and the husband of 1) Candace Sykes and 2) Keziah Rockwell Platt, widow of Peter Platt. Unlike his six older brothers Nathaniel was too young to serve in the Revolution. However, he did join the military in 1787 and was part of the federal force that ended Shay's Rebellion. He left military service as a lieutenant.
He moved from Massachusetts to Butternuts (now Gilbertsville), Otsego Co, NY, in 1791 and settled land one mile east of Butternuts village across Butternuts creek. There he and his wife raised a large family of eleven children, eight of whom lived to adulthood.
In 1834 Nathaniel changed his name from 'Danielson' 'to 'Donaldson' as did his surviving children and most of his nephews and cousins, believing that 'Donaldson' was the original family name back in 1600's Scotland.
In the 1850 Census he was listed as 'Nathaniel Donaldson.' He was also listed by that name in the authoritative 'History of Otsego County, New York,' 1878. However, Nathaniel's family buried him under his former name 'Danielson.'
Rome (N.Y) Daily Sentinel, April 6, 1855, p. 1: "Remarkable Longevity Died - In Butternuts, Otsego County, N.Y. Feb. 18th, 1855, in the 85th year of his age...(youngest child) of John and Ruth Danielson of Brimfield, Mass. ...at the age of 86 years...Two of the children (of John and Ruth Danielson) lived until over ninety years of age...and but one (Frederick) died younger than eighty-five..."
