John "June" Gillingham, 80, died at noon Sunday, August 31, 2003, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

He was born May 20, 1923, in Carrollton to John and Lora (Wood) Gillingham.

On April 4, 1947, in Pocahontas, Ark, he married the former Lois Farber. She survives.

The World War II veteran served with the Seabees of the U.S. Navy. He was owner/operator, along with his brother-in-law, Perry Hetelle, of Frech Tire Sales for 25 years. He was Mayor of Carrollton from 1973 until 1977, served as an alderman and as City Clerk. He was a member of the Carrollton First Baptist Church and the Stuart Pierson Masonic Lodge 50 in Carrollton. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his wife, surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Michael R. and Joan Gillingham of Columbia, Mo.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Diane and Steve Roberts and Carol Knoll, all of White Hall; seven grandchildren, Aaron Gillingham and his wife, Kris, Ryan Gillingham and his wife, Paula Rae, Brandon Roberts and his wife, Jamie Megan Roberts, Amanda Knoll, Kayla Knoll and Jordan Knoll; four great-grandchildren, Jackson, Alexander, and Isabella Gillingham and Alex Bright; five sisters, JoAnn Roth, Mary "Pete" Gillingham, Louise Scheffel, Neoma Schmidt and her husband, Fred, all of Carrollton, and Darlene Carmean and her husband, Richard, of Roodhouse; and two brothers and their wives, Harry and Mildred Gillingham and Neal and Pat Gillingham, all of Carrollton.

His parents; two sisters, Betty Gerson and Lillian Helderman; and a brother, Willis Gillingham, preceded him in death.

Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Carrollton, with Masonic services at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 3, 2003 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Roger Jackson conducting the service.

Burial with full military rites was held at the White Hall Cemetery South of White Hall. Memorials may be made to the Carrollton First Baptist church Building fund. Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton is in charge of arrangements.
