Charles Blakely III

Charles Graham Blakely III, 84, Topeka, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. Blakely was president of C.G. Blakely and Co., which was founded in 1899 in Topeka by his grandfather. He earlier had been in insurance.

He was born Dec. 19, 1916, in Topeka, the son of Charles Graham and Loraine Sewell Blakely. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1934 and attended Washburn University. He earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at Kansas State University in 1938.

Mr. Blakely was an amateur radio operator and helped rescue people in Topeka during the 1951 flood.
Mr. Blakely was a member of the SAR, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter, Certified Life Underwriter. He was past president of the Lincoln Club and Topeka Insurers.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school and participated in the YOMAC Young Married Class. He also was church trustee and he taught Bible class for 20 years.

He married Audrey Marie Smith on May 24, 1942. She died May 5, 2001.
Survivors include four sons, Tom Blakely, Reading, Pa., Jim Blakely, Mike Blakely and David Blakely, all of Topeka; a brother, Victor Blakely, Topeka; a sister, May Voight, Topeka; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Hope Cemetery. Mr. Blakely will lie in state after noon Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, where visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Cremation will follow the services.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 600 S.W. Topeka Blvd., Topeka, 66603; or to the Topeka High School ROTC Scholarship Fund and sent in care of the Topeka High School Historical Society, 800 S.W. 10th, Topeka, 66612-1615.
