Loughridge returned to Mahaska County in Iowa after the war. He enrolled at Iowa State University in Ames, and graduated in 1871 with a degree of A.B. He married Elizabeth Griffith in 1874.
A year later the young couple moved to India. For three years they first studied the Indian language, and then became missionaries in India.
∼*At the age of 16 he enlisted in Co. F, Fourth Iowa Calvary, and served throughout the Civil War.
