B Frank Schoening was born in Berwinsdale, Jordan Township, Clearfield County to Francis and Felinda Bishop-Schoening. (note in that time frame the name was also spelled Shoening). B Frank's father Francis, a member of the Pennsylvania 92nd Volunteer's, died in Nashville, Tn on April 15, 1862 of Typhoid Fever. Felinda would apply for the Civil War Pension Benefits. The first known letter was written by Ms. Eliza Chase, Postmaster Ansonville, for Felinda and it appears the Felinda was illeterate which led to various spellings of her name including Philinda.

In this process, two men from Ansonville, Mr. William T Bloom and Mr. Ezra Algers would appear in almost every document. Other's who would attest or give information read like the Who's Who of Ansonville. Over time the process was succesfull and restitution was made for Felinda and Frank. An interesting note to this is that in all the documents Frank was referred to as "Francis" and his birth was shown as May of 1862, which is in conflict with his Obit which show 1861. Francis and Felinda were married, but three different dates are shown from April, May and June of 1861. It is possible that 1862 was shown so it would not appear that it was an illegimate birth and therefore making any claim for Pension Benefit null and void.

Documents also indicate the Felinda never re-married and that she died in July of 1877. At that time William T Bloom was granted Guardianship for Frank. Eliza Chase must have been able to market more than Postage Stamps as she married William T Bloom some time after the death of Mr Bloom's first wife. William and Eliza were raising the orphan Flora Rakestraw and now with Frank in the picture a new romance would develop. Frank did get into a little trouble with Mr. Bloom and to make a long story short Frank and Flora appeared to have got married rather quickly. Mr Bloom was an Undertaker and a Carpenter and it would appear this is where Frank learned his Caprentry skills.

Frank and Flora would continue to expand their flock and William and Eliza Bloom would be ever present. This is evidenced by William Espie Schoening's Bible that was given and signed by Eliza Bloom. Some of their children would tell me that Frank's name was Benjamin Franklin Schoening. However no documents to date have ever shown that - as close is B Frank Schoening. It is interesting to note however that one man who attested to a pension claim document was Benjamin Bishop - possibly Felinda's brother. Also interesting is that the newspaper account of Frank and Flors's 50th Anniv. indicates that Aaron Alger's attended and that he was a brother of Frank. Also a Seymore Swan appears in the 1870 census in the same household as Felinda, Frank, Ezra and Sarah Algers. In the 1880 Census, now being 12 Yrs old, a Seymore Schoening appears in the household of William T Bloom.

The Schoening Family owes a great debt of Gratitude to William and Eliza Bloom, cause without them, there might not be an us.
