William Espie Schoening was the first of the eleven children of B Frank and Flora (Rakestrawa) Schoening. Flora had a penchant for naming her children after family. In this case William would come from William T. Bloom, the man who raised Flora Rakestraw. The Espie has yet to be determined, but may have come from Eliza Chase-Bloom (wife of William T) who gave William Espie his first Bible.

William Espie grew up in Jordan Township, Clearfield County, Pa. and learned his carpentery skills from his Father. On December 25, 1902 he married Frances Grey Merritt in Clearfield. Espie and Frances would live for a while in Ansonville and then Curwensville before moving to Bradford, McKean County Pa. All six of their children were born in Clearfield County.

Some stories about William Espie
Espie's mother Flora Vianna Rakestraw came from Quaker Roots. The Quaker's did not belive in Gravestones. Espie, Frances and Family in Oak Hill Cemetery do not have a Gravestone. Espie once said "Gravestone's are a monument to the person" and he forbid the family to place a gravestone. Made most clear when he said " I will haunt You from my Grave"

Espie was a "Great Cook" in fact he would cook every Sunday and every Holiday to give Frances a day off.

Espie had a pearl handled revolver and was not bashful about displaying it. Many of young men came to court Margaret Athalia or Audrey Beth were exposed to the revolver and hightailed it and were never seen again.
