Death Was Unexpected
Mrs Abbott DeGrass Boyington, Beloved Stevens Point Lady, Dies at Chicago Hospital
The death of Mrs. Abbott D. Boyington for more than a quarter of a century a resident of Stevens Point occured at St. Luke's hospital in Chicago at 5:20 o'clock last Thursday morning. She had been at the hospital since November 23 and was to have undergone an operation on the day of her death. Although her condition was recognized as serious, she seemed to respond to treatment and hopes for her recovery where entertained up to a short time before the end. Mrs. Boyington had been a sufferer from stomach trouble since last August, but was able to attend to her household duties up to three weeks ago. Just before going to Chicago a gathering, the result of her stomach ailment, formed on her face, and the day following her arrival at the hospital a facial operation was performed. Her daughter Miss Madge Boyington, who is taking a nurse's training course at St. Luke's, was at her bedside when the end came. Mr. Boyington and two sons from the west, Chauncey and Vernon, who had come to Stevens Point on learning of mother's serious illness, went to Chicago Thursday morning, but Mrs. Boyington passed away three hours before they arrived. The father, two sons and daughter accompanied the body to Stevens Point Friday.
Mrs. Boyington maiden name was Ida Elsie Harrold and she was born at Leola, near Plainfield, Waushara county, Dec. 30, 1856, so that she was nearly 61 years of age. When she was five years of age the family moved to Sharon, this county, where she grew to womanhood. She attended the district school near her home and also the public schools
of Stevens Point, following which she was teacher in a district school near Grand Rapids for six years.
On Dec 22, 1879, at the age of 23, she was married to Abbott D. Boyington, and the young couple left shortly afterward to make their home on a farm near Appleton, Minn.(1880 Census Hantho, Lac Qui Parle Co., MN. dwebb), where they remained for ten years. On returning to Wisconsin they took up their residence at what is still known as Boyington's Mill, in Sharon Township, a short time later, however, they removed to Stevens Point, and this city has been the family home for the past 27 years.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Boyington leaves her father Alfred Harrold, aged 86, who lives at Mohall, N.D.; a brother, four sisters, ten children and fourteen grand-children. The children are: Charles, Ida Mae, Eugene and Mrs. F. J. Hornung; all of whom make their home in this city; Miss Madge, Chicago; Mrs. W. E. Francks, Sand Point, Idaho; Vernon, Colburn, Idaho; Richard, Chinook, Montana; Chauncey, Mohall, N.D., and Mrs. P. K. Hallack, Morse, WI. The sister and brothers are Charles Harrold, Saskatchewan, Canada; Mrs. A. J. Foster, Eugene, Oregon; Mrs. M. F. Johnson, Mohall, N.D.; Mrs. M. Kuzee, Mohall, N.D. and Mrs. F. W. Ray, Minocqua, Wis.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon, at 2 o'clock from the family home, 322 Center street, and 2:30 from the Episcopal church of the Intercession and for many years served as Treasurer of St. Anne's Guild of that church.
The death of Mrs. Boyington is the sources of deep sorrow not only among relatives, but among her friends, who recognized in her a woman of many worthy qualities.
