Christine Lawrence Morris, 85, of 2103 Wakelon Road, Colerain, died peacefully at home on March 18, 2006. She was the daughter ofthe late Annie Perry and Luther Lawrence and a native of Bertie County.
Ms. Christine, as she was known to her friends and colleagues, was a graduate of Meredith College. Following her graduation, she taught elementary school briefly in Washington County before joining the U.S. Army. In the Army, she rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant and was stationed at army hospitals in Georgia and Hawaii, where she provided physical therapy to military personnel injured in World War II. Upon discharge from the Army, she returned to Bertie County and married Earl Morris, a former classmate at Mars Hill High School. In her early years of marriage, she devoted her time to raising four children, working on the family farm, and participating in school, church and community activities. In 1961, she returned to teaching. She taught for 21 years, primarily at Asheville Elementary School, but also for a number of years at Windsor Elementary where she was a special education teacher. During her tenure as a teacher, she touched the lives of many hundreds of students with her care and compassion.
She was an active member, until her health failed, of the Mars Hill Baptist Church where she served as a deacon and as a long-time teacher of the senior adult Sunday School class. She was also an active member for many years of Delta Kappa Gamma International, an educational sorority.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Earl Morris, and by her brothers, Harold Lawrence and Mac Lawrence.
She is survived by daughters, Mary Bethel and husband, Art of Fuquay-Varina, Jean Matthews and husband, Bobby of Ahoskie, Laura Cunic and husband, Brad of Belton, SC; and son, Jim Morris and wife Donna of Colerain; sisters, Jane Hutchinson of Lafayette, LA and Margaret Bry of Clinton, SC; sister-in-law, Carolyn Lawrence of Colerain; grandchildren, Craig and Christie Bethel of Fuquay-Varina, Mary Beth Matthews of Ahoskie, Eric Shock and wife, Amber of Winfield, WV, Matthew Shock of St. Albans, WV, and Zach and Nicholas Morris of Colerain and great-granddaughter, Gracee Shock.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all those who provided compassionate care to Ms. Morris during the period of her declining health. Special thanks goes to Dr. Colin Jones of Ahoskie Family Physicians and to her current and former caregivers, Bettina Jernigan, Hallie Smith and her daughter, Donna, Sally Ayers, Sandra Ward and her daughter, Kim, Alice Rogers and Nancy Duffy. Appreciation is also extended to members of the community, church family, and others who did so many things to help her remain at home.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 20, 2006 at Mars Hill Baptist Church, 1325 Meadow Road, Colerain, NC with Rev. Tommy Tripp officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery in Colerain.
The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, NC. from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Sunday; and other times at the Morris home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to University Health Systems Hospice Care, P.O.Box 272, Ahoskie, NC 27910; or to a charity of your choice.
Garrett Funeral Home is serving the Morris family.
