Born in North Middleton Township, the son of David & Elizabeth (Leiphart) Cornman. In 1860, he was a laborer presumably living in North Middleton Township and stood 5' 9" tall with dark hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Carlisle July 25, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 6 as a private with Co. G, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company on May 21, 1863. He also enrolled in Carlisle August 29, 1864, as a private with Co. F, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry (162nd Pa), and honorably discharged with his company June 16, 1865, at Cloud's Mills, Virginia.

He married Mary Jane Low December 24, 1867, in Carlisle. and fathered Annie E. (b. 03/02/69 - married Lincoln Brehm), Minnie F. (b. 08/30/72), and Horace D. (b. 12/25/83). (There likely were others.)
