Walter Golec January 1, 1920 – August 7, 2011

Walter was born to Eva and Dominik Golec on January 1st, 1920 in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from Chadsey High School and then attended Wayne State University.

He then served as a radio operator and top turret gunner in the U.S. Army Air Corps in B-24 bombers in World War II. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross with one oak leaf, four Bronze Stars, the Air Medal with five oak leaf clusters and other medals for his service including presidential citations. Most memorable and notable was his participation in the low-level bombing raids on Ploesti.

He was Commander of a post of the Polish Legion of American Veterans in Michigan and a member of the American Legion.

He married Genevieve Fryc and had two children. They spent most of their life in Detroit where he worked at the Mistersky power station as an electrical engineer and electrician for the city.

In 1983, after they had retired, he and Genevieve moved to Parachute and then to Palisade, Colorado to be near their grandchildren.

He enjoyed repairing televisions, radios, walking and enjoying nature, photography and spending time with family.

He is survived by Genevieve, his wife of 67 years; daughter, Diane Schutz (Patrick Schutz); two grandchildren, Eve Hansen (Levi Hansen) and Gabrielle Schutz, and 14 nieces and nephews.

He was a polite and caring gentleman and he will be missed by all. May he rest in eternal peace.

We will celebrate his wonderful life at a Mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Palisade, CO on Saturday, August 13, 2011.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that any donations be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, 3090B North 12th St., Grand Junction, CO 81506.
