Mary Ann was the oldest of eight children (five daughters & three sons) born to Mathias "Math" & Gertrude (Schmitt) Braun.

On 30 Oct 1906, Mary Ann married Carl Wensel Stovik at Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Wahpeton, ND; she was age 19, he was 26. Born 14 October 1880 in Austria; Carl was the older of two children born to Wensel & Katherine Stovik.

Sister Alexine Braun, OSB stated (1995): "The family lived on a country ranch in Curlew, WA from 1913 until 1936, when the family moved to Wahpeton, ND. With ten sons & one daughter, the family was said to have its own baseball team, complete with a cook."
