Gertude Braun was the youngest of eight children born to Mathias & Gertrude (Schmitt) Braun. Her mother died giving birth to her and Gertrude was named after her mother.

Gertrude graduated from the College of Saint Benedict (Saint Joseph, MN); joined the Benedictine Order at Saint Joseph, MN and received the name of Sister Mary Mark.

Sister Alexine Braun, OSB, shared: "Sister Mary Mark graduated from the Saint Cloud School of Nursing (1930); was a nurse at Saint Alexius Hospital in Bismarck, ND; received her Master's Degree in Nursing from Catholic University of America in Washington, DC (1939); directed the Saint Cloud School of Nursing for six years, then returned to Bismarck for 21 years in teaching and supervisory positions, including two years as hospital administrator.

"She was one of the early promoters of a four-year degree for nurses; directed the Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Mary from 1965 to 1977 and guided it to accreditation by the National League of Nursing. She was sub-prioress at Bismarck, ND from 1979 to 1979 and is remembered as being an amiable, capable and happy person -- much loved by her community.

Sister Mary Mark died from complications of Alzheimer's Disease on 24 February 1992 at Annunciation Priory in Bismarck.
