Maude May Kirby was born on February 11, 1901, in Westville, Adair, Oklahoma, to John Polk Kirby (1876-1963) and Delpha Jane Wise (1882-1950). She was the second of 10 children. Her siblings were Reuben Andrew (1899-1982), Sarah Lou Ella (1902-1980), Della (1903-1980), Mary Anne (1904-1944), Vicy Avo (1906-1996), Nora Evaline (1908-1995), Ollie Leoni (1915-1998), William John "Potter" (1918-1945, died in World War II in Okinawa, Japan), Troy Polk "Polkie" (1922-1992). Maude married Andrew Jackson "Andy" Smith on November 19, 1919. They farmed in Oklahoma for several years, Maude picked cotton, and had four children; John William (1921-2006), Dorothy Louise (1923-2013), Dan Louallen (1926-1992), and Jack (1928-2006). The family moved to Lakeview, Lake, Oregon in 1942. They then moved to Medford, Jackson, Oregon, and Andy worked as a logger and raised cattle. Andy passed away on May 25, 1977, and Maude continued to reside in Medford, where she enjoyed making quilts, reupholstering furniture, and playing the fiddle. Maude passed on January 30, 1996 in Medford, just under two weeks from her 95th birthday. She was buried at Memory Gardens Memorial Park in Medford, Oregon, next to Andy.
