"Marco, Mina, beloved companions of Edward Elgar." Marco was a spaniel, whose pedigree name was Cooden Rajah. He was taken ill while still a puppy and Sir Edward cancelled several engagements in London to look after him. Percy Hull, the organist at Hereford Cathedral, gave Marco some curative powders, but his dog, Harry, objected to the visitors to their house in the Cathedral Close and tried to attack the spaniel. Upon the latter's recovery, Dr. Hull received the following letter : "I am very grateful to you for the powders. My master has not been quite well for a long time and I propose to give him a course of powders as the instructions advise. The next time I bring Sir Edward to Hereford, you will find him improved. I do not complain of my reception in the Close; I will only say that if my casual acquaintance, Mr. Harry Hull, ever comes here, he will receive a warm reception. (N.B. There are two of us here.) With respect to Mrs. Hull, Cedric, and yourself, Believe me to be, Your devoted Marco."
