EDWARD HAYDEN PASSES AWAY
News of Death of Prominent Alton Citizen is Received With Feelings of Sorrow and Regret
WAS AN EARLY PIONEER
Edward Hayden, one of the most prominent citizens of Waseca County, or many years a resident of Alton Township, passed away at his home on Saturday morning after a comparatively brief illness. The news of his death was received with genuine sorrow and regret.
Death was due to pneumonia which followed an accute attack of flu. He was ill about two weeks. Within a say or two of his death strong hopes were entertained of his recovery. The day previous to his death he was reported doing well. For that reason the announcement was a surprise and a shock to his numerous friends all over the county.
Mr. Hayden was born in Toronto, Canada, on June 13, 1847. His age was seventy-five years, eight months and eight days. In early youth he removed from Toronto to Monticello, Wis. He left there in 1862 and settled in Waseca County, where he continued to reside until his death. On April 19, 1877, he was married to Miss Mary Lawless at Kilkenny, Minn. He was the father of six children, five of whom survive him – Mrs. Simon Connely of Waseca; Mrs. H. J. O'Toole of Janesville; Edward F. of Tracy, Mrs. John Sheeran of Waseca; and L. A. Kahnke of Janesville. He is also survived by his wife and one sister, Mrs. Ann Foley of Janesville.
Mr. Hayden possessed a very pronounced personality. Strong in his convictions of right and of duty, he never failed in reflecting his opinions and his faith. His genial temperament, at times somewhat impulsive, served to make him a favorite with his most intimate friends and to establish a standard of integrity and manhood which he exemplified in his daily walk and conversation. His honesty and integrity were never impugned.
The funeral was conducted on Monday morning at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Rev. Father Condron officiating. It was attended by a very large concourse of people from all parts of the county. The remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery.
Solemn requiem high mass was said at the funeral, Father Condron, Celebrant; Father Treanor, Deacon; Father Brazilla, Sub-Deacon; Father Cahill of Tracy, Assistant.
Those from out of town to attend the funeral were: M. S. Lawless, E. S. Lawless, Thomas Foley, Miss Agnes Foley and Mrs. John Countney of St. Paul; Edward Foley of Swatara; Michael Mulich of Arcadia, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Lawless and Frank Lawless of Kilkenny, J. S. Lawless, Mr. and Mrs. John Lawless, Miss Irene Lawless, Mr. and Mrs. John Pate and C. Mulcahey of Waterville.
