William Wanless, born in Montreal Canada 28 Sept 1835, was the son of George Wanless and Isabella Kay. According to the "History of St. Clair County," Michigan (Chicago: A.T. Andreas & Co., 1883), William migrated to Chicago in 1857 and worked in the car shops of the Chicago & Galena Railroad for two years. He, then, moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he worked in the shops of the Memphis & Charlestown Railroad until the Civil Way broke out. In 1862 he moved north to Port Huron, St. Clair County, Michigan, where he lived for the rest of his life. A trained carpenter, William worked in the car shops of the Chicago & Grand Trunk Railroad, where he was promoted to foreman by 1873.

On 11 Dec. 1866, William married Eliza T. Gain in Port Huron (b. 1838 in Ontario, Canada - died 1913 in Port Huron). They had three children: George W. Wanless (1867 - 1934); Margaret/Mary Ann (b. 2 August 18 1870 - d. 2 April 1871 from mumps); and Susan Gertrude Wanless (b. 15 May 1873 - d. 22 January 1959; married John Alexander Christie in 1897).

William died of leukemia in Port Huron on June 4, 1903, age 67 years, 8 months, 7 days. He and Eliza are both buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Port Huron, where their son, George and George's wife, Irene, are also buried.
