George was born in the parish of Chattan in Northumberland. joined the Royal Artillery First Battalion on the 1st January 1821 as a Gunner & Driver. He mustered into the Regiment of Artillery at Berwick in Co. Berwick on 28 Feb 1821, at the age of 22. His occupation before joining was a Shoemaker. He served one year & one month in the West Indies, Canada Nine years & four months, & the remainder at home.
He was admitted into the Military hospital in Brantford, Canada on the 1st January 1839 having dislocated his right thumb & injured his left shoulder. He had fallen on some ice while carrying a bundle of wood & when he slipped a splinter of wood stuck in between his index finger & thumb. A poultice of Chamomile was placed & bandaged onto the wound, but after two weeks it began to smell, so the surgeon took the bandage off & the thumb just fell away causing a massive hemmorhage, so it was decided to remove the bone and bits of thumb which were still there. He was discharged as medically unfit for service on the 8th October 1839 aged 40 years. He was also unable to perform his usual motions with his left arm due to a fall on his shoulder at drill last summer. He was mentioned in the good service book for his excellent service and good character. His discharge was discussed on the 18th September 1839 in Woolwich, Kent (now east London).
