Elizabeth is the daughter of George Wanless and Isabella Kay, the third of nine children. Siblings include:

Elizabeth was born in Woolwich, Kent, England and emigrated with her family around 1832. She lived in Montreal area and Pittsburgh Township, (now Kingston), Ontario where she met and married Henry Nagle. They moved to Montreal with the Wanless family. With two small children, Elizabeth and Henry pushed west to Detroit, Michigan for a few years and eventually settled in Chatham, Ontario where their last four children were born.
Elizabeth's brothers Thomas and James both settled in Chatham, so they had extended family connections in the area. Brothers George, William and John settled across the border in Bay City, Michigan and Port Huron.
Elizabeth Wanless Nagle worked as a shoemaker along with her husband and had eight children:
