John William Holman was the son of Henry Bowles Holman and Elizabeth DuVal of Old Virginia.

He was born 23 November 1809 in Henrico County, Virginia. John moved with his parents to Barren County, Kentucky as a small boy. John was most likely named after his Uncle John Bowles Holman.

John William Holman married Elizabeth "Eliza" Settle. Her family had moved to Kentucky from Old Virginia too. She was born in Barren County, Kentucky.

John W. Holman and Elizabeth "Eliza" (Settle) Holman were the parents of 12 children: William, Sarah, Charles, Mary, Joseph, Nancy, Simon, Susan, Malinda, Alice, James and unknown infant.

John and Eliza are buried in the Holman-Beckham-Pedigo Family Cemetery on farm property they once owned. The farm is located about two and half miles south of present day Pondsville Community, and 4-5 miles east of present day Smith's Grove, Warren County, Kentucky.

John Holman worked as a farmer, planter, ran a wool carding mill and taught school for a time in Warren County, Kentucky. He was a loving husband, loving father and a friend and neighbor to many. He was a member of the Old Christian Church in their neighborhood.
