Mabel Baldwin
RICHLAND

Memorial service for Mabel Louise Grieve Baldwin, 97, will be Saturday 11 a.m. at Seattle First United Methodist Church Chapel in Seattle. Graveside service will be May 24 at Pleasant Prairie Pioneer Cemetery in Spokane. Evergreen Washelli Funeral Home in Seattle is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Baldwin died April 25.

Born in Spokane, she attended Webster Grade School and North Central High School in Spokane.

When she was 18, she worked for a summer in Olympia for her uncle, Grant Hinkle, who was then Washington's secretary of state. That summer she saved a 9-year-old boy from drowning in Puget Sound near Olympia.

Mrs. Baldwin earned a teaching certificate from Cheney Normal School. She also attended Washington State College, where she was a member of Delta Zeta sorority.

Her first teaching job was at Valleyford School, where she taught fifth and sixth grades.

She later moved to Pasco, where she met her husband, Raleigh Baldwin, a math teacher at Pasco High School. They married in 1930 and moved to Spokane.

In 1994 they moved to Richland to be near their daughter. Mr. Baldwin died that year.

Mrs. Baldwin was a member of Westminster Congregation Church for 57 years and a member of the Meadow Springs Presbyterian Church in Richland.

She was a member of the Spokane Garry Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for 53 years. Through her efforts a memorial was erected to Chief Spokane Garry.

Additionally, she was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority Alumni in Spokane for more than 50 years, the Kellogg Travel Club, Sociable Service, and the Woman's Club of Spokane and delivered for Meals on Wheels.

She served under Gov. Dan Evans' President's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped for the State of Washington.

Mrs. Baldwin was involved in the Associated Garden Clubs of Spokane, Lazy Dazy Chapter, and won many blue ribbons for her flower arrangements.

Survivors include her son, Robert Baldwin of Longview, Wash.; two daughters, Elizabeth Pratt of Seattle and Mary Palmer of Richland; 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
