Herbert E. Worthy, 88, of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, formerly of Grinnell, died early Saturday, December 7, at Marshalltown Medical-Surgical Center.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Raymond C. Lott, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Organist will be Kathleen Heffner, and pallbearers will be Bill Foster, Dale Foster, Dave Foster, Jerry Holland, Mark Hunziker, Gary Rudkin, Tom Rudkin, Richard Worthy, John Worthy, Duane Worthy, and Brian Worthy.

Veteran's rites will be performed by the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit, with burial in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The son of Edward and Ellen Bawden Worthy, he was born May 29, 1897, at Oskaloosa. He attended Oskaloosa schools and Penn Academy.

During World War 1 he served in the Aero Squadron of the U.S. Army in France.

He was married to J. Ellen Brubaker on June 18, 1919, at Oskaloosa, and the couple farmed near there until 1939 when they moved to the Grinnell area. In 1957, Mr. Worthy retired from farming and moved to Grinnell. He was a member of Focht-Tennant Post No. 53 of the American Legion here. He had lived at the Iowa Veterans Home since 1978.

His wife died in 1979. He was married to Leona King on October 25, 1980.

Survivors include his wife Leona, eight children, Marjorie Cloyed of Ottumwa, Vivian Hance of Fairfield, Francene Sears of Grinnell, Keith Worthy of Grinnell, Charlotte Rudkin of Urbandale, Curtis Worthy of Burlington, Adah Hunziker of Sully, and Donna Holland Jesch of Shell Rock; 23 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; four stepchildren, John King of Oskaloosa, Fount King of Phoenix, Ariz, Edna Mae Duncan of Oregon, and Adolph King Jr. of Bussey; several step grandchildren, and step great-grandchildren; and a sister Dorothy Singer of San Pedro, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ellen; twin daughters, Arlene and Darlene Worthy; one son, Robert; three grandchildren; and six sisters, Edna Chord, Blanche Wortman, Marquerite Coppage, Nellie Visser, Gertrude Springer, and Florence Visser.
