1872 - President of National Education Association
1884 - 1886 - President of National Council of Education

1876-1883 - In his inaugural address, President Emerson E. White declared that within its field Purdue must lead, not follow. Under his leadership, Purdue was set firmly on its course of emphasis on agricultural and "mechanic arts" as mandated by the Morrill Act. White also is remembered for his failed attempt to ban fraternities on campus, which led to his resignation in 1883.

He was also the writer of the Memo-rim to congress on the National Bureau of Education and author of the accompanying bill that was introduced by James Garfield and passed.
