Lydia (Wilkins) ~ West ~ Colby was my Great Grandma. She was born to Luther and Sarah C. Joy ~ Wilkins at home, here, in Au Sable Forks, New York in 1878.

She was married twice. Grandma Lydia had dealt with much heart breaking tragedy in her life! Her 1st husband, Fred West, was born in Westport, New York and this is where they made their home. They had 2 children, a son, who lived but a month. He born 28 of June 1896 and died 19th of July 1896. Their Baby Boy was laid to rest at the Black River Cem. Westport, New York among his Grandmother, Annie Daniels ~ West Family. She was pregnant with my Grandmother, Gladys West when Grandpa Fred died unexpectedly of ruptured appendix 2 days before Christmas, the 23 of Dec. 1896. She returned shortly after G~Grandpa Fred's death to be with her parents, here.

She married her 2nd husband, Edward C. Colby, on the 21st of March 1897. My Grandma, Gladys was born the 28th of June 1897. She was raised by Ed Colby as his own daughter. He was the only father she knew, and they were very close.

G~Grandma Lydia, and G~Grandpa Ed had 3 children of their own, 2 sons and a daughter. Their 1st son, Jesse L. Colby 1910 ~ 1975 and toddler daughter, Grace E. Colby 1915 ~ 1917 who died before her 2nd birthday, and their 2nd son, Jack R. Colby 1918 ~ 1945 was killed in action in Italy during WW2.

My Grandma, Gladys was murdered at the age of 43. My Great Grandma, Lydia tried to filled the void, the absence of our Grandma as we were growing up. She was a strong, affectionate woman who was devoted to her family, and also she loved their horses on their farm on Green Street. ~ May she rest in Eternal Peace in the House of the Lord ~ Fondly Remembered By: Sharon - her great granddaughter
