John was in the trucking business and worked for Mason & Dixon Lines in Kingsport, Tenn., before buying his own trucks and going into business for himself. He hauled fuel oil for Oboyle Tank Lines in the Washington, D.C., area. He later bought rental apartments with his brother, Payne Marshall, at Singer Island, Fla., and along with his wife, Myrtle, managed these for over 20 years. John and Myrtle retired to Pulaski, Va., where they were members of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. He was an avid golfer and member of the JDM Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., for many years. He enjoyed his family and watching professional baseball, golf and most all sports events.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Myrtle; five brothers; and eight sisters.
He is survived by his sons, Charles Burton "Buck" Marshall, of Charlotte Hall, Md., John Granville Marshall Jr. and daughter-in-law, Carol, of Peoria, Ariz., and David Allen Marshall, of Pulaski, Va.; six grandchildren; eight greatgrandchildren; and brother, Payne Marshall, of Kingsport, Tenn.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 16, 2011, from the Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, Pulaski. Burial will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin, Va. Visiting will be held on Friday evening, July 15, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. from the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorial gifts be sent to the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1946 Medallion Drive, Pulaski, VA 24301.
