Ed undertook studies in pharmacy but gave it up and returned to work on father's farm which upon his father's death inherited farm at Lot 10 Con 5E/6W 5th line of Erin Twp.
On Christmas Day 1907 he married Agnes Jane Russell, eldest daughter of William John Russell (Irish) & Agnes Jane Russell (Scottish)
His hobbies were hunting, fishing, and playing fiddle (a violin with attitude). He had a part ownership of a large hunt camp along with the Down's of Rockwood, at Port Loring. on the shores of Lake Memesaugamesing, in Northern Ontario.
