- Mrs. Martin Krahn Is Trapped In Flaming Home -
A Beechwood woman burned to death Tuesday evening when she was trapped in the living room of her flaming farm home located a mile and one-half north of Beechwood.
The body of Mrs. Martin Krahn, 69, was found by Beechwood and Cascade firemen after the Krahn home had burned to the ground. Mrs. Krahn's daughter-in-law and two children, who lived on the second floor of the Krahn home, were rescued from the flaming structure by the firemen.
The fire broke out at about 6:45pm Tuesday. Martin Krahn and his son were handling the evening milking in the barn on the farm when they noticed flames at the house. Martin Krahn immediately drove into Beechwood to notify firemen.
According to Art Staege, Beechwood fire chief, the combined efforts of the Beechwood and Cascade fire department and of a water truck from Dacada were not enough to save the home. "It was burning all over at once," Staege said. Flames were shooting out of many parts of the home when the firemen arrived.
Rescued via ladders from their second story apartment in the Krahn home were the two grandchildren of the senior Krahns, one and 2-1/2 years old, respectively, and the children's mother, Mrs. Raymond Krahn. Raymond Krahn effected the rescue from the roof of the building.
Mrs. Krahn was born June 25, 1880. She is survived by her husband and two sons, Raymond and Ervin. Funeral services will be held Sunday at two pm at the Beechwood Reform church.
