Judge Hutcheson was sent to several schools as a youth and attended the University of Virginia and the University of Texas School of Law. His summers were spent fox hunting and reading with his family in the mountains in Tenn. at their summer home, referred to as "The Ridge". He served as legal counsel for the city of Houston, TX. from 1913 to 1917 and was elected the Mayor of Houston for a term during 1917/18. Subsequently he resigned as Mayor when he was nominated by President Wilson for a vacated position as Federal District Judge for the Southern District of Texas in early 1918. In 1930 President Hoover elevated him to a position on the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. He became its Chief Judge from 1948-1959. In 1945 he was appointed as the U.S. Chairman to the British/American Commission on the settlement of Jews in Palestine by President Truman. He passed away after several years with complications from a stroke. SAR #65958.
