James Wallace was born May l5,1804,in County Tyrone,in the northern part of Ireland. He came to America with his parents at the age of four. He was reared on a farm in the Tuscarawas Valley, Pennsylvania, learning the cabinetmaker's trade. He moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, finding employment in his trade.
He saved his money and came to Lafayette to open a cabinetmaker's shop. He conducted his business with increasing success until 1853 or 1854,and by timely investments in real estate he accumulated a competence.
In 1865 James Wallace laid out a plat of 48 lots that was the addition known as the Reserve Block, now called the Wallace Triangle. He built his home on the corner of 9th & [919] State Street.
