RECENT DEATHS.
Durkee. Deacon Horace Durkee
died last evening in the 86th year of
his age. Dea. Durkee was one of St.
Johnsbary's oldest and most respected
citizens. He was born in Lebanon,
N.H., Oct. 25, 1802, moved to Albany in
1833 and to St. Johnsbury in 1865. Up
to the time of his moving to this place
he was engaged in farming, though in
his earlier life he served a number of
terms as a most successful teacher in
the district schools. For the last 20
years he has not been engaged in any
very active business pursuits, living a
quiet and retired life. In May of last
year he was prostrated with a nervous
trouble from which he never fully re-
covered, though he was able to walk
out ten days ago. He was not conscious
during his last hours. He was
married at Meriden, N. H., in 1833 to
Mary S. Baker, who survives him. To
this union were born three children,
a son Joseph who died in service
during the war, a daughter, the first
wife of Daniel Carpenter, who died
some 17 years ago and another
daughter who died in infancy.
Deacon Durkee was a man of many
marked characteristics. Converted at
the early age of nine years he was
admitted to church membership at eleven
and has ever since been a most devoted
Christian, holding the office of deacon
in his church at Albany, a title which
he has honored all the years of his life
since. A single example will suffice to
show his sterling honesty. When
visited by the listers in their annual trip
it was his custom to lay before them
every particle of property in his
possession, witholding nothing, and
leaving it with them to use their own
judgment. At this late hour; before
going to press, there is neither time nor
space to speak at length of Deacon
Durkee's many marked Christian traits,
A great Bible student, he lived on the
Word. His daily life was no ordinary
commentary on the value of the Chris
tian religion. Always in his place at
church and prayer meeting, a life-long
Sunday school teacher, ever ready to
do his part, he stayed up the hands of
his pastor as surely as Aaron and
Hurthose of Moses.
Funeral services will be held Saturday
at 9.30 ; burial at Albany.
