RECENT DEATHS.
Durkee.
Mrs. Horace Durkee died at her
home on Summer street, Saturday,
April 20, aged 83. Mary S. Baker
was born in Meriden, N. H., and in
1833 married Horace Durkee of
Lebanon, and moved to Albany, this
state, where they lived until 1865
when they came to St. Johnsbury
where was their home ever
afterwards. Dea. Durkee died last
October after a long illness. Since his
death Mrs. Durkee has gradually
failed and passed quietly away on
Saturday. She was buried in the
family lot at Albany beside her
husband and two children. She leaves
no near relatives, her three children
being all dead. Daniel Carpenter is
executor of both estates. The bulk
of her property, some $9000, is
willed to three different missionary
societies.
Mrs. Durkee was a woman of
unusual mental ability and very
marked Christian character. In
this respect she was a fit
helpmeet for her companion of 55
years. For the past ten or fifteen
years she had been unable to attend
church or go out among people by
reason of infirmity, but until lately,
when her mind began
to give way, her faith was strong
and her mental powers most
vigorous. For more than 20 years both
she and her husband were valued
members of the North Congregational
church.
