The son of Samuel Sneed and his wife Esther Turner Sneed. His middle name may have been Turner.
He married 29 Jan 1838, Patrick Co., VA, to Sally Foley, the daughter of James and Judith (Thomas) Foley. John was 21 years old; Sally only 15. Their first child, a boy they named Samuel after John's father, was born in September 1839.
Like most of their neighbors in the southwestern part of Virginia at that time, John and Sally were poor and illiterate. Their great-granddaughter, Billie (Sneed) Leighter many years later made a trip back with her own daughter Nancy to explore the area and try and seek out the family's old home and some trace of the Sneed family. They found a very steep, hilly, wooded country unsuited for agriculture, with only enough arable land along the creek beds to perhaps put in a vegetable garden and run a cow or two. There were few people left there who remembered much of the early history of the neighborhood, but Patrick County had remained a part of the frontier until long after the Revolutionary War. There were a few prosperous families there in the early 1800's (and Sally's grandparents, the Thomases, were not considered poor at the time), but most struggled just to scrape by and feed their children. There were few cultural amenities, all of the towns were mere villages, and the county courthouse itself was so ill-supplied that for more than fifty years the criminal records of the county were kept scrawled on the walls of the two jury rooms. (They were unfortunately lost when the rooms were finally given a new, badly needed coat of paint.) But even those few records weren't even begun until 1875, after John and Sally had left Virginia.

By 1850, John and Sally had four children. They owned no real estate and were living next door to Sally's cousin, Richard B. Thomas, and two of her brothers, James A. Foley (Jr.) and Samuel Foley.

In October 1853, Sally's parents and two brothers sold their land in Patrick County and moved with their families a little further west to better land in Mercer County in what would become West Virginia. John and Judith apparently made the move at the same time, as their son John was born in Mercer County in Nov 1864. In any case, they were listed near each other on the 1860 census in Mercer County, along with Sally's brother Richard B. Foley. Back in Patrick Co., VA, John's father Samuel had died in Jan 1856.
Mercer Co., WV may not have been a raw frontier, but it was definitely still undeveloped. The settlers there were all poor, but there was plenty of game to kill for meat.
An Englishman traveled there in 1852 and wrote about his travels [from Mercer Co., WV website]:
"Our route lay over ridges and hills of moderate height intersected by valleys, through which ran clear, bright streams, like English trout brooks, and here and there from out the hillsides burst springs of cool water. By bridle-tracks and forest paths we wandered on under the splendid timber. Glorious oaks were plentiful, of three different kinds, and the rest of the forest growth was mainly chestnut, walnut, maple, sugar maple, and "Wachoo."

Game abounded in these solitudes, and deer would jump up close to the path, whilst turkeys and pheasants would calmly survey us till Manor made a dash and scattered them; but unfortunately no one carried a gun, for we had enough to carry without that.
Settlements were few and far between, and those only log cabins of the poorest. After a twenty-five mile walk, we reached one of these, the owner of which took us in and fed us on bacon and maize corn bread, the staple food of the country."
The 1860 census shows them with ten children at home.

Sally died in Mercer Co., WV, sometime between 1861 (when her youngest child, Barnet, was born) and 1863, when John remarried. She would have been buried in the Sneed family cemetery near Spanishburg.

"The conditions under which they lived were very humble, compared to the living of the prosperous farmers of Spanishburg today. Rude log cabins, hewn out by hand, and roughly constructed furniture, also made by hand completed the tiny structure. They endured the hardships and braved the wilds to accomplish one main object - to settle the new area in perfect freedom. They then, by hard day toil turned the wilderness country into fruitful fields of abundance.
That which added adventure to the community in the year of 1863 was the battle fought by the Cherokee and the Shawnee Indian tribes. Many were killed and the homes of the few white settlers were threatened by the Indians. The site of the battle is today marked by the beautiful pleasure resort "Shawnee Lake", named for this famous battle."
With a house full of children to care for and a farm to maintain, John, age 48, quickly found a new wife. He married twenty-year-old Mary Ferguson on March 27, 1863. They were listed on the 1870 census with three new children. None of the children were in school:

Be it remembered that I, John Sneed of the County of Raleigh State of West Va. being of Sound mind and Memory and considering the uncertainty of this frail and Transitory life do therefore make, ordain publish and declair this to be my last will and testament that is to say, first after all my debts are paid and discharged the residue of my estate real and Personal I give bequeath and dispose of as follows, to wit: to my beloved wife Mary Jane the lands and appurtenances situate thereon lying in the County of Raleigh State of West Va. adjoining the lands of Bartley Cole and others it being the same lands on which I now reside during the term of her natural life and after her death to my son Jeremiah Benjamin Sneed, to have and to hold against all persons whatever and my personal estate to be divided as the law may direct. He married 29 Jan 1838, Patrick Co., VA, to Sally Foley, the daughter of James and Judith (Thomas) Foley. John was 21 years old; Sally only 15. Their first child, a boy they named Samuel after John's father, was born in September 1839.
Like most of their neighbors in the southwestern part of Virginia at that time, John and Sally were poor and illiterate. Their great-granddaughter, Billie (Sneed) Leighter many years later made a trip back with her own daughter Nancy to explore the area and try and seek out the family's old home and some trace of the Sneed family. They found a very steep, hilly, wooded country unsuited for agriculture, with only enough arable land along the creek beds to perhaps put in a vegetable garden and run a cow or two. There were few people left there who remembered much of the early history of the neighborhood, but Patrick County had remained a part of the frontier until long after the Revolutionary War. There were a few prosperous families there in the early 1800's (and Sally's grandparents, the Thomases, were not considered poor at the time), but most struggled just to scrape by and feed their children. There were few cultural amenities, all of the towns were mere villages, and the county courthouse itself was so ill-supplied that for more than fifty years the criminal records of the county were kept scrawled on the walls of the two jury rooms. (They were unfortunately lost when the rooms were finally given a new, badly needed coat of paint.) But even those few records weren't even begun until 1875, after John and Sally had left Virginia.

By 1850, John and Sally had four children. They owned no real estate and were living next door to Sally's cousin, Richard B. Thomas, and two of her brothers, James A. Foley (Jr.) and Samuel Foley.

In October 1853, Sally's parents and two brothers sold their land in Patrick County and moved with their families a little further west to better land in Mercer County in what would become West Virginia. John and Judith apparently made the move at the same time, as their son John was born in Mercer County in Nov 1864. In any case, they were listed near each other on the 1860 census in Mercer County, along with Sally's brother Richard B. Foley. Back in Patrick Co., VA, John's father Samuel had died in Jan 1856.
Mercer Co., WV may not have been a raw frontier, but it was definitely still undeveloped. The settlers there were all poor, but there was plenty of game to kill for meat.
An Englishman traveled there in 1852 and wrote about his travels [from Mercer Co., WV website]:
"Our route lay over ridges and hills of moderate height intersected by valleys, through which ran clear, bright streams, like English trout brooks, and here and there from out the hillsides burst springs of cool water. By bridle-tracks and forest paths we wandered on under the splendid timber. Glorious oaks were plentiful, of three different kinds, and the rest of the forest growth was mainly chestnut, walnut, maple, sugar maple, and "Wachoo."

Game abounded in these solitudes, and deer would jump up close to the path, whilst turkeys and pheasants would calmly survey us till Manor made a dash and scattered them; but unfortunately no one carried a gun, for we had enough to carry without that.
Settlements were few and far between, and those only log cabins of the poorest. After a twenty-five mile walk, we reached one of these, the owner of which took us in and fed us on bacon and maize corn bread, the staple food of the country."
The 1860 census shows them with ten children at home.

Sally died in Mercer Co., WV, sometime between 1861 (when her youngest child, Barnet, was born) and 1863, when John remarried. She would have been buried in the Sneed family cemetery near Spanishburg.

"The conditions under which they lived were very humble, compared to the living of the prosperous farmers of Spanishburg today. Rude log cabins, hewn out by hand, and roughly constructed furniture, also made by hand completed the tiny structure. They endured the hardships and braved the wilds to accomplish one main object - to settle the new area in perfect freedom. They then, by hard day toil turned the wilderness country into fruitful fields of abundance.
That which added adventure to the community in the year of 1863 was the battle fought by the Cherokee and the Shawnee Indian tribes. Many were killed and the homes of the few white settlers were threatened by the Indians. The site of the battle is today marked by the beautiful pleasure resort "Shawnee Lake", named for this famous battle."
With a house full of children to care for and a farm to maintain, John, age 48, quickly found a new wife. He married twenty-year-old Mary Ferguson on March 27, 1863. They were listed on the 1870 census with three new children. None of the children were in school:

The son of Samuel Sneed and his wife Esther Turner Sneed. His middle name may have been Turner.
He married 29 Jan 1838, Patrick Co., VA, to Sally Foley, the daughter of James and Judith (Thomas) Foley. John was 21 years old; Sally only 15. Their first child, a boy they named Samuel after John's father, was born in September 1839.
Like most of their neighbors in the southwestern part of Virginia at that time, John and Sally were poor and illiterate. Their great-granddaughter, Billie (Sneed) Leighter many years later made a trip back with her own daughter Nancy to explore the area and try and seek out the family's old home and some trace of the Sneed family. They found a very steep, hilly, wooded country unsuited for agriculture, with only enough arable land along the creek beds to perhaps put in a vegetable garden and run a cow or two. There were few people left there who remembered much of the early history of the neighborhood, but Patrick County had remained a part of the frontier until long after the Revolutionary War. There were a few prosperous families there in the early 1800's (and Sally's grandparents, the Thomases, were not considered poor at the time), but most struggled just to scrape by and feed their children. There were few cultural amenities, all of the towns were mere villages, and the county courthouse itself was so ill-supplied that for more than fifty years the criminal records of the county were kept scrawled on the walls of the two jury rooms. (They were unfortunately lost when the rooms were finally given a new, badly needed coat of paint.) But even those few records weren't even begun until 1875, after John and Sally had left Virginia.

By 1850, John and Sally had four children. They owned no real estate and were living next door to Sally's cousin, Richard B. Thomas, and two of her brothers, James A. Foley (Jr.) and Samuel Foley.

In October 1853, Sally's parents and two brothers sold their land in Patrick County and moved with their families a little further west to better land in Mercer County in what would become West Virginia. John and Judith apparently made the move at the same time, as their son John was born in Mercer County in Nov 1864. In any case, they were listed near each other on the 1860 census in Mercer County, along with Sally's brother Richard B. Foley. Back in Patrick Co., VA, John's father Samuel had died in Jan 1856.
Mercer Co., WV may not have been a raw frontier, but it was definitely still undeveloped. The settlers there were all poor, but there was plenty of game to kill for meat.
An Englishman traveled there in 1852 and wrote about his travels [from Mercer Co., WV website]:
"Our route lay over ridges and hills of moderate height intersected by valleys, through which ran clear, bright streams, like English trout brooks, and here and there from out the hillsides burst springs of cool water. By bridle-tracks and forest paths we wandered on under the splendid timber. Glorious oaks were plentiful, of three different kinds, and the rest of the forest growth was mainly chestnut, walnut, maple, sugar maple, and "Wachoo."

Game abounded in these solitudes, and deer would jump up close to the path, whilst turkeys and pheasants would calmly survey us till Manor made a dash and scattered them; but unfortunately no one carried a gun, for we had enough to carry without that.
Settlements were few and far between, and those only log cabins of the poorest. After a twenty-five mile walk, we reached one of these, the owner of which took us in and fed us on bacon and maize corn bread, the staple food of the country."
The 1860 census shows them with ten children at home.

"The conditions under which they lived were very humble, compared to the living of the prosperous farmers of Spanishburg today. Rude log cabins, hewn out by hand, and roughly constructed furniture, also made by hand completed the tiny structure. They endured the hardships and braved the wilds to accomplish one main object - to settle the new area in perfect freedom. They then, by hard day toil turned the wilderness country into fruitful fields of abundance.
That which added adventure to the community in the year of 1863 was the battle fought by the Cherokee and the Shawnee Indian tribes. Many were killed and the homes of the few white settlers were threatened by the Indians. The site of the battle is today marked by the beautiful pleasure resort "Shawnee Lake", named for this famous battle."
With a house full of children to care for and a farm to maintain, John, age 48, quickly found a new wife. He married twenty-year-old Mary Ferguson on March 27, 1863. They were listed on the 1870 census with three new children. None of the children were in school:

He married 29 Jan 1838, Patrick Co., VA, to Sally Foley, the daughter of James and Judith (Thomas) Foley. John was 21 years old; Sally only 15. Their first child, a boy they named Samuel after John's father, was born in September 1839.
Like most of their neighbors in the southwestern part of Virginia at that time, John and Sally were poor and illiterate. Their great-granddaughter, Billie (Sneed) Leighter many years later made a trip back with her own daughter Nancy to explore the area and try and seek out the family's old home and some trace of the Sneed family. They found a very steep, hilly, wooded country unsuited for agriculture, with only enough arable land along the creek beds to perhaps put in a vegetable garden and run a cow or two. There were few people left there who remembered much of the early history of the neighborhood, but Patrick County had remained a part of the frontier until long after the Revolutionary War. There were a few prosperous families there in the early 1800's (and Sally's grandparents, the Thomases, were not considered poor at the time), but most struggled just to scrape by and feed their children. There were few cultural amenities, all of the towns were mere villages, and the county courthouse itself was so ill-supplied that for more than fifty years the criminal records of the county were kept scrawled on the walls of the two jury rooms. (They were unfortunately lost when the rooms were finally given a new, badly needed coat of paint.) But even those few records weren't even begun until 1875, after John and Sally had left Virginia.

By 1850, John and Sally had four children. They owned no real estate and were living next door to Sally's cousin, Richard B. Thomas, and two of her brothers, James A. Foley (Jr.) and Samuel Foley.

In October 1853, Sally's parents and two brothers sold their land in Patrick County and moved with their families a little further west to better land in Mercer County in what would become West Virginia. John and Judith apparently made the move at the same time, as their son John was born in Mercer County in Nov 1864. In any case, they were listed near each other on the 1860 census in Mercer County, along with Sally's brother Richard B. Foley. Back in Patrick Co., VA, John's father Samuel had died in Jan 1856.
Mercer Co., WV may not have been a raw frontier, but it was definitely still undeveloped. The settlers there were all poor, but there was plenty of game to kill for meat.
An Englishman traveled there in 1852 and wrote about his travels [from Mercer Co., WV website]:
"Our route lay over ridges and hills of moderate height intersected by valleys, through which ran clear, bright streams, like English trout brooks, and here and there from out the hillsides burst springs of cool water. By bridle-tracks and forest paths we wandered on under the splendid timber. Glorious oaks were plentiful, of three different kinds, and the rest of the forest growth was mainly chestnut, walnut, maple, sugar maple, and "Wachoo."

Game abounded in these solitudes, and deer would jump up close to the path, whilst turkeys and pheasants would calmly survey us till Manor made a dash and scattered them; but unfortunately no one carried a gun, for we had enough to carry without that.
Settlements were few and far between, and those only log cabins of the poorest. After a twenty-five mile walk, we reached one of these, the owner of which took us in and fed us on bacon and maize corn bread, the staple food of the country."

Sally died in Mercer Co., WV, sometime between 1861 (when her youngest child, Barnet, was born) and 1863, when John remarried. She would have been buried in the Sneed family cemetery near Spanishburg.

"The conditions under which they lived were very humble, compared to the living of the prosperous farmers of Spanishburg today. Rude log cabins, hewn out by hand, and roughly constructed furniture, also made by hand completed the tiny structure. They endured the hardships and braved the wilds to accomplish one main object - to settle the new area in perfect freedom. They then, by hard day toil turned the wilderness country into fruitful fields of abundance.
That which added adventure to the community in the year of 1863 was the battle fought by the Cherokee and the Shawnee Indian tribes. Many were killed and the homes of the few white settlers were threatened by the Indians. The site of the battle is today marked by the beautiful pleasure resort "Shawnee Lake", named for this famous battle."
With a house full of children to care for and a farm to maintain, John, age 48, quickly found a new wife. He married twenty-year-old Mary Ferguson on March 27, 1863. They were listed on the 1870 census with three new children. None of the children were in school:

Be it remembered that I, John Sneed of the County of Raleigh State of West Va. being of Sound mind and Memory and considering the uncertainty of this frail and Transitory life do therefore make, ordain publish and declair this to be my last will and testament that is to say, first after all my debts are paid and discharged the residue of my estate real and Personal I give bequeath and dispose of as follows, to wit: to my beloved wife Mary Jane the lands and appurtenances situate thereon lying in the County of Raleigh State of West Va. adjoining the lands of Bartley Cole and others it being the same lands on which I now reside during the term of her natural life and after her death to my son Jeremiah Benjamin Sneed, to have and to hold against all persons whatever and my personal estate to be divided as the law may direct. Likewise I make, constitute and appoint my Brother in Law James J. Ferguson to be Executor of this my last Will and testament hereby revoking all former Wills by me made.
