Judge F. A. Bettis, former mayor of Spokane, and whose life covered a long range of prominent service in the army and in legislative and municipal affairs, died at Long Beach, Cal., at the age of 76 years.

Mustered July 17, 1861.
Promoted Sergeant Major.
Mustered out July 31, 1864, expiration of 3 year term of service.

Based on enlistment his service included battles of New Madrid & Island # 10, Siege of Corinth, MS (Apr 2-May 30,1862)Battle of Iuka(Sep 19) where regiment won high honors by holding its ground against four times its numbers, making 3 charges with bayonet when all ammunition was exhausted. Out of 480 engaged, the 5th lost 220 killed and wounded. Battle of Corinth (Oct 3-5 62). In 1863, ,Champion's Hill, Port Gibson, Raymond, Black River Bridge, Siege of Vicksburg,MS (May-Jun 63), Jackson,MS (Sep 63) Missionary Ridge, Chattanooga, TN (Sep-Nov 63).
