Catalina was the daughter of John & Margaret Bellinger Post. Her father was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and served as a staff officer with New York companies in several major campaigns. As a young woman she developed a knee infection and was too modest to allow her skirts to be lifted above the ankle. As a consequence, the infection threatened her life and the leg was amputated. She married Jeremiah Bettis on 28 Jun 1820 in Onondaga Co, NY. "Jeremy", as he was called, served in the War of 1812, losing his left leg at age 23 due to an accidental musket wound. How common was it to find a couple who both had wooden legs? Jeremy was able to work as a farmer and died in Wilson County, Kansas in 1874.
