Although the following article is a good read it appears to be fiction. Leonard worked and live in Stephenville as a carpenter. He died of a heart attack in Stephenville.
Here is a article I (Ken Jone) found on Leonard Bryant Edwards, how touching: Fifty-year-old grave uncovered, said to belong to dog named Boots They found it there, after some of the briars and brush had been hacked down. The marker was homemade but carefully done from native stone and set on a stone base. A name and dates were scratched in by hand but were still clearly visible after more than 50 years of neglect. The couple stood before the small grave just outside the old rock fence encompassing the Old Valley Grove Cemetery. Across the top of the stone was B O O T S in strong marks with the dates 1937 and 1950 on either side of the name. They stared at it, wondering. According to stories told during cemetery workings, that little grave outside the fence, was the last resting place for a much loved dog, the solitary companion for a recluse who lived in the fishing shack a few feet away in the woods. Leonard Edwards was the old gentleman's name and he lived in the shack with Boots and took care of the cemetery.
Leonard or "L" as he was called, was a relative of the Roberts family who owned that property.
From his one room plank and tin cabin, he and Boots could fish the river, and hunt the woods whenever the notion took them. L didn't have water at his place, other than the Bosque River water so ever so often he walked up the hill to a neighbor's house and brought back drinking water for himself and his dog. One cold winter day, Boots just lay down and died, mostly of old age. L wrapped the body in one of his old shirts and with tears streaming down his face, dug a deep hole, so the varmints couldn't get to him, and buried his best friend. During the next week, he carefully carved out a stone and placed it on the grave. He and Boots had been together for 13 years according to the marker and L was to live another 19 years alone. When his neighbor hadn't seen L in several days, he went down the hill to look for him and found the old man dead inside his shack. L wasn't buried in the Valley Grove Cemetery, where he had been the self-appointed caretaker for many years, that burial ground flooded so much that it was closed for burials in 1909. They buried him in the New Valley Grove Cemetery on Highway 281 about 3 miles south of Stephenville. His simple marker reads Leonard B. Edwards 1887-1969. Valley Grove was a thriving settlement in the late 1800's but gradually dissipated as settlers moved back from the river that was often treacherous. Many of Stephenville's earliest leaders are buried in the cemetery including John B. Dupuy who was elected Chief Justice or County Judge of Erath County in 1857. He died in 1862.
