Civil Engineer, Teacher of Science, Author, Lawyer. Dr. Millington was the third son of Thomas Charles Millington, an attorney and Ruth Hill Millington. In 1802 he married Emily Hamilton and had six children. That same year he received a license to become a practicing attorney. He was an English civil engineer and teacher of engineering for many years during England's first attempts at formal education in engineering. He helped found the London Mechanics' Institute in 1823 and published his first book, "A Epitome of the Elementary Principles of Natural and Experimental Philosophy" that same year. In 1829 he left England with his family for Mexico to take charge of a mine at Quanajuato. When his business was finished in Mexico in 1832 he traveled to Philadelphia where he opened a scientific equipment store and was an engineering consultant. In 1833 on the way to join join her husband in Philadelphia, his wife Emily died of unknown causes. He married a second time to Sarah Ann Letts and they had three children. From 1836 until 1848 he was a Professor of Chemistry, Natural Philosophy and Civil Engineering at William and Mary. At the University of Mississippi he taught chemistry, natural philosophy, geology and agriculture for five years. In 1853 he accepted to become a Professor of Chemistry and Toxicology at the Medical College in Memphis TN and became Dean of the Faculty until he left in 1863 to move between Philadelphia and Memphis during the duration of the Civil War. After the war he returned to Richmond where he died on July 10, 1868 in his ninetieth year.
