Schenectady Gazette, Schenectady, N. Y. Friday 16 Aug 1918 page 5 summary

Ballston Spa, Aug. 15—Lieutenant LYMAN J. ELLSWORTH, who recently returned from overseas duty, met instant death this morning when he was thrown from a motorcycle and under the wheels of a Schenectady trolley car. His companion, MAYNARD LAMOREAUX suffered multiple fractures of the skull and numerous cuts on the head and body. It was necessary to take about 30 stitches in the head.

The fatality occurred at the main road crossing of the Schenectady railway company, about a mile and half south of this village. The men were on their way to work in Schenectady. Mr. Lamoreaux driving the car and Lieutenant ELLSWORTH riding in the side car. As they approached the crossing, Mr. Lamoreaux saw that the collision with a fast approaching trolley was unavoidable, so in order to forestall that result he turned the motorcycle down the track. Lieutenant ELLSWORTH apparently fearing the motorcycle was about to hit a trolley pole, rose from his seat, and it is not known whether he jumped or not, but was thrown under the middle of the trolley car and the rest truck passed over his body. Lamoreaux struck the trolley pole, but was thrown several feet and picked up unconscious.

Lieutenant ELLSWORTH was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. George Ellsworth of this village and besides his parents is survived by a wife and three month old son.

Lieutenant ELLSWORTH had but recently returned from France and was expecting to be recalled into service within a short time. He had been a member of Company L, Second Regiment, N. Y. N. G. for a number of years.
