Birth: Campaman Co. Limerick, Ireland
Sad Ending Of A Lonely Life
Editor Argus.
The people of the vicinity were startled, last Wednesday morning by the
announcement that Mr. Jeremiah Hogan has been found dead in his dwelling house, situated about four-quarters of a mile from the town of Old Janesville.
Mr. Hogan's death will no doubt be keenly felt by friend and numerous acquaintances, being one of the earliest pioneers of this place, having resided on the farm which he died, for seventeen or eighteen years. For a person of his eccentricities, he amassed considerable property, and at the time of his death, there was $400 or more in cash, bound away with notes and (can not read) of no small value. He died alone, and at a time when death is unexpected, in the prime of life, where the fearful conflict of contending fully two feet of snow on the road, thereby cutting off all communication, for two or three days. It is presumed that he died while the late terrible storm was raging, for some assert that he was seen a week ago, last Monday coming into two while others are quite certain that they saw him on the Thursday following. But it was certain that he wads dead four or five days before his body was found. For his horses that were tied in the stable, were, when found nothing more than skeletons, as compared to their former condition. They had gnawed one of the logs of which the stable was built, almost entirely though. This goes to show that they were for some time without food or water, and it is well known that nothing short of death, or lack of strength or reason would hinder him from giving them their customary comforts. The immediate cause of his death is unknown, but some suppose it was caused by apoplexy. Had there been anyone present to care for him, it might have been different – it might not but who knows? None but the all powerful Ruler that shapes our end.
