DEATH SUMMONS THOMAS HOGAN
Leading Citizen and Farmer Passes Away at His Home West of Town on Wednesday the Twenty-Forth
FUNERAL ON FRIDAY AFTERNOON
In the death of Thomas Hogan, there passed away a highly respected citizen, a kind neighbor and friend, a good man, whose life was marked by substantial success. He died in the early morning on the twenty-fourth of August.
About a year ago, Mr. Hogan was taken ill. Up to that time, he had enjoyed remarkable good health all his life. For a time he improved and he continued to perform his work and the duty that came to him in the management of his farm. But as time went on he gradually grew weaker. Perceptible although slowly, he continued to fail although he was loath to submit. A man of strong will and impulses and with a determination not to yield but held out against the inevitable. A few months ago he was compelled to give up work. Since that time his family have cared for him and watched during the hours of his illness. The disease with which he suffered was diagnosed as acute kidney trouble.
Mr. Hogan was a devout follower of the Catholic faith and during his sickness, he received comfort and consolations that may on be afforded by that faith. He bore his sufferings with calm resignation and perfect contentment.
Mr. Hogan was born in Ireland sixty-eight years ago. He came to America when twelve years of age. He settled in Janesville in 1856 and since that time has been a resident of this place and Alton. Forty-two years ago he was married to Ann O'Brien, who together with Thomas J. Hogan, Mrs. M. F. McKowen, Mrs. M. I. Symington and the Misses Catherine and Ellen Hogan, survive him.
The funeral was conducted Friday morning at St. Ann's Church in this place, Rev. Father Fox, officiating. A large concourse of people were present, attesting to the respect and regard in which the deceased was held by the people. The remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery.
Among those from out of town, to attend the funeral, T. J. Hogan, Mrs. M. F. McKowen, Mrs. M. I. Symington, and the Misses Kate and Ellen Hogan, T. A. Hogan and Edward Bevens of Minneapolis, Mrs. P. Mulcahey, of Hector and J. D. Hogan, Jas. A. Hogan and Wm. Naughton of St. Paul.
