Kenneth E. Abbey, 61, formerly of WSU

SPOKANE—Graveside services are scheduled Friday at 4 p.m. at Greenwood Memorial Terrace at Spokane for Kenneth E. Abbey, 61, a former assistant vice president for business at Washington State University in Pullman.

Abbey died of cancer Sunday in Coeur d'Alene.

He was born in Spokane June 5, 1933, and graduated from North Central High School in 1951. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Washington, and later studied at the University of Oregon. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1953 to 1955.

Abbey worked at WSU from 1968 to 1990, when he resigned to become dean of administrative services at Northwest College in Powell, Wyo.

He was a member of the UW crew team and helped establish rowing as a competitive sport at WSU and Oregon. He was an assistant coach and adviser for many years at WSU, and a member of the National Association of Amateur Oarsmen and Western Intercollegiate Crew Coaches Association.

While at WSU, he was involved in many civic and economic development programs in Pullman and Whitman County. He was a member of the Clearwater Economic Development Council, the Whitman County Regional Planning Council, the Pullman Planning Commission and the Pullman-Moscow Water Resources Committee.

He married JoAnn O'Neill Oct. 5, 1957. They divorced in 1993.

He is survived by a son, Nelson of Coeur d'Alene; two daughters, Shannon of San Francisco and Erin of Seattle; and a sister, Beverly Black of Beaverton, Ore.

Memorial contributions may be made to the WSU men's crew program in care of the WSU Foundation, or the Hospice of North Idaho, W. 280 Prairie Ave., Coeur d'Alene.
